I do not understand this game as i live in Africa? There is a divisional series, championship series and world series… what is the difference? and why do some teams play more frequently than others? Thanks
I find the structure very confusing. The season is extremely long, but thanks for the answers.
John H, your answer was brilliant! thanks
If there is a tie for the lead after 162 games, they play a one-game playoff which is like a 163rd game but it decides the playoffs. Like if there's a tie for the wildcard, say both teams got 90-72, they play one more game to decide who gets into the playoffs. The divisional series is the first series of best of 5. Losers get eliminated and winners go to the Championship series for a best of 7. Winners move on and losers get eliminated. Then, its the best of 7 World Series. 2 teams play each other for up to 7 games and winner gets rings and glory til next season and the loser just gets the joy of playing in the World Series.

the 162 vs 163 is only because of interleague play. There are several games every year that do not matter for rank. the teams in different leagues play each other so the owners can get a good fan showing at a rare game. Like the Yankees vs Mets.
The playoffs are like this: division, league, world.
The 4 teams in each league (American and National0 playoff to see who will go to the world series and play the other leagues chamo.
So, the first round is divisional (each team is set in a division during the regular season) The winner of the division plays the other winner of their division. That winner is the champ of the league (American or National)
They go to the world series and play the other.
Hope that helps.

Look at the standings on a sports website and you will see the break down of divisions

The reason why teams play 163 instead of 162 is because of tie breakers. Two teams tie with the same regular season record but for playoff purposes they need to play one more to break the tie and to make a clear winner. The White Sox went through this after the current season. The dolt above me who said interleague do not matter in rankings???? They do in fact and they are called standings not rankings.

The teams that play 163 are either tied for the division or the wild card

All teams play 162 games of baseball. It makes it interesting to watch 162 and makes anything possible. There are many comebacks that happen and is interesting to watch comebacks in 162 game seasons.
163rd Game is added between two teams(or more) That tie for a play off spot. Then that is decided in a 1 game play off. Winner goes to the playoffs.
The playoffs is then on. The Division Series is best of 5. So the first to take 3 of five. When someone gets to 3 wins the series is over and the one at 3 advances
The Championship series is best of 7. Just like hockey play offs first to 4 advances to the next round, The World Series. Then from their in the world series, (which is like the Superbowl of football or Stanly Cup of hockey) 2 teams go against each other in the best of 7 where the winner of 4 wins the world series.

The regular season is 162 games. This year Minnesota and Chicago White Sox played 163 because they were tied at the end of the regular season. The play offs. Four teams in each league make the playoffs. The three division winners and the second place team with the best record. Each league has a playoff. The first round The division series is best of five games. Teams are ranked 1-4 with four always being the second place team. They cannot play the team from their division is this round. The second round is best of seven The league championship series. The winners of the league championship series meet in the World Series.

All teams are scheduled to play 162 games. The majority of the games are within their own league (American League or National League). Approximately 20 games are played against teams in the other league, called Inter-League Play.
When two teams tie at the end of the regular season and one of the teams would move into the playoffs, there is a one-game playoff. The winner continues, the loser goes home. The home team is determined by a coin flip in the Commissioner’s Office.
If teams are tied for any place in the standings that would not move into the post-season playoffs, they just remain tied, no extra game.
Nobody really cares if two teams are tied for last place.
