I'm a senior member of our hs xc team. This year, us seniors agree that we want everyone to feel comfortable and welcomed. we want it to be a real team. The points we wanted to improve on are: the freshmen are always shy. and when we were freshmen, the seniors were nice but they didn't reach out enough at all. what activities could we do that would break the ice?
hmmm I spent years as a camp counselor so this is a great question!
For each team you'll need one T- shirt and one plastic storage bag. Place one nicely folded T-shirt in each bag then pour in about 2 cups of water and freeze all of them overnight. If this wasn't done where the event is taking place bring the T-shirt in a cooler filled with ice to keep them frozen. Instruct the teams that they'll be playing an Ice Breaker game. Then hand out the bagged T-shirts to each team. On "Go" the teams will have to get their T-shirts thawed out so that one person from their team can put the T-shirt on. Teams will get creative in their attempts to win. They could run the shirts underwater, put them in the microwave and even pounded the ice out of them. The first team to come back with one person in the T-shirt is the winner.
Another fun one is to break the team down in to smaller groups. Then have each small group stand on a tarp. Then fold the tarp in half and have everyone get on the tarp again. Keep folding the tarp and eventually everyone ends up on each others backs and it gets really silly. Tell them they have to stay on the tarp for like 30 seconds without falling for it to count.
The website below has some cute ideas too. Great idea by the way…………

I know a game called "two truths and a lie" where everyone gets in a circle and, in turn, says three interesting things about themselves. Two are truths, one is a lie, and everyone else in the circle has to guess which is the lie. It's interesting and you learn about the other people sitting in the circle.

Well, you could do the "little known fact" sheet. Ask everyone for a little known fact or cool thing about themselves before the event. Could be things like "I went to Europe this Summer" or "I hate pizza." Then draft up a little match-the-guy with the little known fact handout. Make everyone mingle to figure out the answers.
Or you could split up into age-mixed teams and have each team come up with a slogan/theme for this season. Have them put it on paper with artwork. Everyone loves to draw. Then vote. Give prizes to the winning team!

In my high school xc team we first of all offer fun runs during the summer so the team can get to know each other and at thoes fun runs, along with every friday after pratice starts, we play team sports like no boundry soccer or kickball. Everyone feels welcome and it's fun! Also if a new member of the team is having trouble everyone gives them advice and we have someone run with them to help them. It really helps make a strong team.
