Why New York City Is A Baseball Town

It’s true that football, basketball and hockey have their fans, but the sports year begins in February and ends in October – preferably the end of October. And even during the other three and a half months, the hot stove league consumes the city’s consciousness, even eclipsing the Jets and Giants playoff runs.

This love for the game of baseball dates all the ways back to the 19th century as baseball was played throughout New York in its earliest forms. The birth of the National League in 1876 eventually brought the city the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants and when the American League set up shop in 1901, the New York Yankees soon set up shop.

Rooting for a baseball team in New York wasn’t about what team was better, it was an absolute birthright. People were born into a fan base and there was no switching side. As the Yankees established themselves, their fans came from the Bronx and also attracted the corporate visitor and tourists.

The Dodgers and Giants were different. Working class, blue collar fans in the first half of the 20th century tended to back one of the two National League teams. Giant fans were generally from Manhattan, while the city’s largest borough had their beloved Dodgers. Much like the class system of the early 19th century, which broke down people by nationality and religion, New Yorkers were identified with the teams they followed.

The best example of that came in 1951, where the Dodgers and Giants finished tied after the 154 game season. A three game playoff was ordered by the National League, which culminated with “The Shot Heard Around the World” by Giants’ Bobby Thompson. Fans fought with each other and until this day old Brooklyn Dodger fans still feel the pain.

After the Giant win, they proceeded to be swept by the Yankees, who had a young and talented Mickey Mantle in the outfield.

The Dodgers had their day in 1955, giving Brooklyn their only championship, but the days of the Boys of Summer ended two years later when the Bums and Giants upped and left for the West Coast.

With only one team in town, the fans of the Dodgers and Giants left behind did not back the Yankees, rather they followed their teams from afar or stopped watching all together. Only when the New York Mets were formed in 1962, did these spurned New Yorkers find a team.

Much like the their predecessors, the Amazins’ quickly established themselves as a people’s team. Although they were inept, fans flocked to the old Polo Grounds – and eventually Shea Stadium – to watch the Mets and root against the Dodgers and Giants when they came into town.

The Yankees, meanwhile, just kept winning. Champions in 1961 and 1962, they lost the Fall Classic the next two years. Then the bottom fell out. They finished close to the bottom or last for the rest of the decade, as the team aged and the mighty farm system went barren.

That gave the Amazing Mets a chance to take the city. And in 1969 they won the World Series against insurmountable odds. Led by young pitchers like Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, the Miracle Mets won their first the Series 4-1 over the Baltimore Orioles.

They stayed in contention for the next seven years, but never got back to the top.

The Yankees resurged after George Steinbrenner bought the team and through free agency built the 1977 and 1978 champs. But the Boss’s hands on approach eventually cost those Bombers due to too many bad moves.

As the Yankees went down, the Mets came back and in 1986 won the Series again, beating the Boston Red Sox in seven games. Much like the team of a generation before, these Mets were competitive until 1991, but never won the big game.

But like before, when the Mets faded, the Yankees came to the forefront. This time winning four crowns in five years (1996, 1998-2000). Unlike past teams, these Bombers were built from within, while cheery-picking the other talent through free agency and trades. Led by future Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, the Bombers remain a force in the American League.

The Mets enjoyed a resurgence in 1999 under controversial manager Bobby Valentine and catcher Mike Piazza. They even went to the Series in 2000, only to lose to the cross town Yankees. Then, after five years of mediocrity, the Mets came back in 2006 behind young stars David Wright and Jose Reyes and were one strike away from the World Series, losing to the eventual champion St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

What makes baseball in New York unique these days is the rivalry between the Mets and Yankees. The teams didn’t play each other in non-exhibition games until 1997 and the Subway Series is the highlight of every season. Both Shea and Yankee Stadiums get a mixed but behaved crowd when the two teams play each other. As both the Met and Yankee fans root for their teams, you can hear chants for both clubs back and forth for all nine innings.

And that’s unlike any other sport in the city. Hockey games tend to have more violent outbursts in the stands, while games between the Knicks and Nets and Jets vs. Giants matches could be played anywhere, since the intensity just isn’t there in comparison.

And that’s why New York, first and foremost, is a baseball town.

What is the best place to get a full set of pokemon games?

i mean all of them including the console games and i want to avoid the corporate evil such as ebay and gamestop if at all possible
I'm 18 and miss the older games,
I want to procure the games because there used to be an independent game store two blocks away from my home and it was driven out of business when i was twelve and a gamestop opened up across the street from me.
and i'm in houston tx

Learning How to Deal The Life of a Casino Worker

Being a Casino game dealer can be fun, challenging, and lucrative. Many dealers find roulette to be one of the more interesting games to deal. Although it is a bit repetitive like blackjack, there are different things roulette dealers do. In blackjack it’s constantly dealing and counting the cards, and paying or taking money. In roulette dealers pick up chips, spin the ball, and move chips around on the layout. But the tips are a little bit less at roulette. Bettors tend to wager less money on roulette than on blackjack, and they tend to tip in proportion to what they are playing.

What is the most challenging part about roulette for dealers? Definitely the totaling of bets because there are so many combinations to figure out. Sometimes the math can get a bit hard. But you get used to it after a while. You’ll be able to look at the layout and know how much to pay without even thinking about it. And you have to be very diligent about watching the entire roulette table, especially when it becomes crowded. Manual dexterity also comes into play as a roulette dealer. When you are working out of a tray on the blackjack table, you just take the chips out to pay the players or pick up bets. But in roulette you have stacks and stacks of chips to slide across the table to the players. That’s why dealers receive a lot of breaks. Not only is there constant repetitive motion in roulette, but it also requires constant mental concentration in order to keep it all together.

After several years of dealing, one can expect to climb their way up the ladder. In a casino, the usual hierarchy goes dealer, floor supervisor, pit administrative boss or supervisor, assistant shift manager, shift manager, and finally, casino manager. As an assistant shift manager, you usually help shift manager with whatever tasks needed that day. On the regular shift manager’s days off the assistant operates as the shift manager. As such, they are basically in charge of the entire casino during that particular shift. The gaming industry is definitely a service industry now and their main desire is for people to have fun. They make sure that the customers are having a good time. But their main responsibility is still to watch the money and to ensure that everything is on the up and up.

Management can be a stressful job. Some days you come in and nothing goes wrong. However, there are some days that the phone starts ringing and suddenly there are a million things to do. This person checks in, that person wants more credit, this one has won a lot, and that person is mad because he has lost too much. So anything can come up. Managers are generally on the casino in order to be visible and make themselves readily available if someone needs them. And it does become bewildering at times to see people blow an enormous amount of money. So you can get jaded after a while. But it’s important to remember it’s not you who is taking the money, it’s the game. You can’t take it personally. You learn to realize you have no control. All the odds are built in.

The industry has changed a lot. The dealers did not have a lot of say in the old days. You made good money so you weren’t going to talk back. It is more of a guest-service industry now. For the dealer it’s no longer, “Hey, you [the customer] want to gamble, I don’t have to be nice,” and for the player it’s no longer, “I have all this money so I can call you [the dealer] whatever I want.” The whole industry has become a more pleasant place in which to work. You meet many wonderful people, fellow employees as well as customers. Dealers also enjoy the games, and of course, the money they earn.

More casinos are going corporate whereas they used to be privately owned. Corporations offer better benefits and more vacation time. The industry just keeps growing. Workers also noticed that it didn’t used to be hard to move from city to city but now it seems much more difficult after the industry opened up all over the country. Many would probably not be able to go into a Strip casino in Las Vegas and still be an assistant shift supervisor without losing their position. It still is pretty simple moving from property to property within the same area, though.

The most challenging part of the casino experience has to be learning to deal with all the personalities of the other employees. There aren’t many women in this field, so workplace dynamics can be difficult for them to fit into.

Most of the craps dealers are men, the roulette dealers are women, and blackjack gets a mixture of both. Management is still mostly men, but figures are always changing. Anyone interested in this industry should just go for it. The stress level of working in a casino is there but some days are better than others, as with any job. It’s also a great career if you have children or if you are going to school because you can work almost any hours to fit into your schedule. Many experienced dealers suggest that new dealers start out with blackjack since it is one of the more basic and easier of the games to deal.

You can get the fundamentals down with blackjack, then when you move to more complicated games you will already understand security procedures, such as how to make sure no one is cheating the house and how to show your employers that you are not cheating them. You’ll be able to focus more on the dealing itself. No dealer is expected to learn all the games, but they are somewhat more valuable when they can.

Lloyds Tsb and the Olympics

Know anyone who was employed by Lloyds, and no longer is? Give them a ring, perhaps it is with the savings from his layoff that Lloyds is able to play the role of Santa-Claus-like sponsor for the upcoming Olympics. There are no other opportunities for a graceful and thoroughly respectable publicity stunt of that magnitude. Last week Lloyds TSB Group and London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games announced that Lloyds TSB has become the first domestic partner and the exclusive Banking Partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Rumor has it that the title and the privileges came with a hefty contribution tag of 80 million pounds.

Lloyds TSB increased second-half profits for the year 2006 by 22 percent by cutting its operational expenses. The bank transferred 2,800 jobs to India and eliminated 1,200 jobs. The focus on greater efficiency led to the loss of jobs at home. In press release published on Marched 13, Lloyds TSB enthusiastically reveled about job security reaching the 18-month high. Unfortunately, the conclusion drawn does not match the figures. In the survey conducted by the bank the customers were asked five questions, two of which addressed employment. The question “Do you feel your job is more secure or less secured than 12 months ago?” was answered positively by 22%, negatively by 21%, and 55% of the customers felt that it that there was the same. The question “Do you think employment prospects in the UK in general are better or worse in than 12 months ago?” was answered positively only by 15%, negatively by 37%, and 42% of the customers felt that is there was no change. Trevor Williams, chief economist of Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets, was quoted as stating that “On the back of continuing solid economic growth, consumers are regaining confidence in the security of their jobs and the UK employment market in general.” This startling conclusion seems to be based on the 1% percent difference in the answer to the first question (22% vs. 21%), while overlooking the 22% difference in answers to the second question completely (15% vs. 37%). Considering that over a third of Lloyds customers feel that employment prospects in the UK are down compared to those a year ago, it is unclear just what exactly is being applauded. Unless, of course, it’s a warm-up for the upcoming Olympics.

London 2012 Organising Committee Chairman Sebastian Coe is very pleased about Lloyd’s sponsorship, “…and I am delighted to welcome Lloyds TSB to the Olympic and Paralympic Family”. Sir Victor Blank, Lloyds TSB chairman is positively gushing, and hopes the sponsorship will encourage all Lloyds’ customers to attend. As Lloyds TSB continues to effectively reduce its operational costs, one might hope that a ticket to this spectacular, historical event will be a part of an employee severance package.

Is it really annoying to see a corporate name in front of the bowl name?

Well.. FedEx Orange Bowl, Nokia Sugar Bowl.. Tostitos Fiesta Bowl..
It's kinda annoying.. Hey I don't want to know that FedEX, Nokia, and Tostitos pay millions of dollar to sponsor the bowl game..

It is incredibly annoying but it is just another sign of the times. I feel the same about all the arenas and stadiums who have done the same thing. Just look at Philadelphia: Lincoln Financial Field (Eagles), Citizens Bank Park (Phillies), and the Wachovia Center (76ers & Flyers). I hate it but I don't see it changing anytime soon. Far too many big corporations are willing to pay out big bucks for the naming rights to these bowl games, as ridiculous as they sound. I mean come on, the Papa Johns.com Bowl, Capital One Bowl, AT&T Cotton Bowl? That's not to mention the BCS bowls. But like I said, as absurd as it is, I don't see it changing anytime soon.
